General description
Based in Oxfordshire UK RAL is the largest national research laboratory in the UK. The Laboratory employs over 1700 scientists, qualified engineers and support staff. The Laboratory supports large-scale research facilities for the UK academic community. Major facilities include a neutron beam source, a synchrotron radiation source, and a high power laser facility. The Central Microstructure Facility (CMF) at RAL has a £ 30 million investment in state of the art equipment for micro and nano fabrication and characterization. The CMF has 25 qualified scientists and engineers involved with a large number of research projects funded both nationally and the EC. Over the past few years the CMF has participated in well over 10 ED projects, often as a Co-ordinator. The CMF also has significant commercial interests. Currently there are 6 SMEs who routinely interact with the facility for their commercial product development. The CMF has participated in a large number of EU projects, sometimes as a Coordinator. |
